Local Wineries and Vineyards

In college, I took a wine tasting course with a local oenithologist who used to own a major wine store in the city. It was a good experience, considering I had known basically nothing before that.

One of the statements that I remember him saying was something along the lines of, “When people think of American wine, they usually think of Napa Valley in California. However, there are wineries in all fifty states.” I never bothered checking up on that statement, especially since it sounds kind of crazy: even Alaska? Yes, even Alaska. The don’t actually grow grapes there, but they do make ice wines out of local fruits and berries.

After searching around a bit, I found AllAmericanWineries.com. They list wineries by state in all fifty states. Not even Yahoo! with it’s massively larger budget has wineries listed in all fifty states (they only have forty).

So go check out a local winery or vineyard and see what’s fermenting nearby! Many wineries offer tours and have tasting rooms. Think “Sideways“.
