Has Guinness Gone Nuts?

Diageo (the owners of Guinness and a ton of other stuff) announced that they’re ready for a six-month test run of Guinness Mid-Strength in Limerick. Guinness Mid-Strength is supposed to be Guinness with about half the amount of alcohol (2.8% ABV v. 4.8% ABV).

What?! Who thought this was a good idea? Basically, I would now have to drink twice as much to get the same buzz, and I’m guessing each pint’s still going to cost the same. They don’t say anything about fewer calories, which I think would be a good reason to tamper with the Guinness formula. Instead, their focus appears to be solely on the alcohol content.
