Sipping Rum

My experience with rum tends to be drinking Rum-and-Cokes or taking shots of it and feeling it burn a path to my stomach. However, some people are working to change that and introduce high-quality rum to Americans. Rum is quickly becoming the new trend.

Rum comes in four varieties: flavored or mixing rums, quality rums, sipping rums, and reserve or refined rums. The first is what we usually pick up at the local package store and what propelled us on our drinking careers in college. The rest can be as varied and fine as wine. According to John Mihajlov, co-owner of a rum nightspot in Minnesota, the sugar cane from which rum is made has different characteristics depending on where it’s grown. Plus, there are different techniques for aging.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed - Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.
