Death by Alcohol Withdrawal

I find this surprising and depressing. A coroner ruled that a 21-year-old student died from alcohol withdrawal.

Yes, you read that correctly. Alcohol withdrawal.

While death isn’t a typical outcome, it apparently has happened according to the news report. However, other people are incredulous of the finding.

The symptoms of alcohol withdrawal seem very typical of withdrawal from any substance abuse. Of course, I’m no doctor, so you should go find a real one if you may be experiencing these problems.

  1. Nick Spry Says:

Severe alcohol withdrawal has a high risk of complications such as seizures and has a much higher mortality rate than most other drugs. Alcohol consumption should always be reduced gradually over a period of days to minimise the risks, or if one stops drinking abruptly, the withdrawal needs to be carefully managed with sedatives such as diazepam to reduce the risk of seizure.
