Antabuse

Holy crap! I learned something from watching The Drew Carey Show!

In one episode, Mimi sneaks a drug called “Antabuse” into a cookie that she gives Drew as a prank. As a result, they all start puking when they drink beer.

Sure enough, Antabuse is real. The actual name is disulfiram. Antabuse is the brand name.

It causes flushing, throbbing in head and neck, throbbing headache, respiratory difficulty, nausea, copious vomiting, sweating, thirst, chest pain, palpitation, dyspnea, hyperventilation, tachycardia, hypotension, syncope, marked uneasiness, weakness, vertigo, blurred vision, and confusion. In severe cases, it can also cause respiratory depression, cardiovascular collapse, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, acute congestive heart failure, unconsciousness, convulsions, and death.

Good God. That drug sounds like a nightmare. However, it is used to prevent alcoholics from drinking and to receive their treatment soberly. It’s yet another reason to drink in moderation.
