Hibernian Ale Tasting

Hibernian AlesI just returned from the Hibernian Ale tasting at Harpoon. It’s actually still going on, but the room was just so crowded and hot that we decided to leave early. There are few things grosser than a massive crowd of sweaty people crammed into one room. However, the Hibernian Ale itself was good. The ale wasn’t too hoppy, had a good color and a crisp taste, and tasted very fresh.

I’m at a loss, however, as to why this event was special. To be invited, you had to be a Friend of Harpoon. Then, you had to survive a random drawing limited to a 100 winners. After winning, you and one guest could then go taste the new ale along with any of the other beers on tap. They had large baskets of pretzels, popcorn, and chips, and the organization Horizons for Homeless Children was out recruiting volunteers.

Aside from the volunteer opportunities, it seemed like the standard end to any brewery tour, except the room was really packed. Unless something happened in the last hour that I missed, then I can’t imagine why anyone would want to go to the tasting rather than just go on a tour and get free beer at the end. (Actually, I think you can get free beer if you just go to the store regardless.)
