Beer and Food Matchings

The March 2006 issue of Men’s Health contains a good answer to a letter asking, “I match wine with food. Should I match beer with food, too?”. Here’s a synopsis of the answer:

  • When you’re not sure, ale = red wine and lager = white wine. Then, pair accordingly.
  • Red Meat: Eat with something full-bodied, such as brown ale and porters.
  • Fish: Lagers go well with fish. However, the best is Belgian-style wheat beer.
  • Sauces and Gravies: Pair with brown ale or porter.
  • Desserts: Drink a beer that’s sweeter than the dessert, such as a strong stout.
