The 20 Greatest Movie Drinkers
The March 2006 issue of Maxim lists the 20 greatest movie drinkers. I previously reported on the top 10 but only now did I finally get my March issue to reveal spots 11-20. I’ll have to add some of these to my Netflix cue:
- 20. Paul Giamatti as Miles Raymond in Sideways
- 19. Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy in Anchorman
- 18. Richard E. Grant as Withnail in Withnail & I
- 17. Jeff Bridges as The Dude in The Big Lebowski
- 16. W.C. Fields as The Great Man in Never Give a Sucker an Even Break
- 15. Dave Thomas & Rick Moranis as Doug & Bob McKenzie in Strange Brew
- 14. Gene Wilder as Jim, The Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles
- 13. Walter Matthau as Coach Buttermaker in The Bad News Bears
- 12. Billy Bob Thornton as Willie T. Soke in Bad Santa
- 11. William Powell & Myrna Loy as Nick & Nora Charles in The Thin Man
I feel that Paul Giamatti, Jeff Bridges, and Billy Bob Thornton should be higher on the list.

Nick Cage drank himself to death in Leaving LasVegas, how the heck didn’t he get on the list. Jim Morrison did the same in the Doors. And what about Jimmy Stewart in Harvey, if that movie isn’t the best advertisement for alchohol, I don’t know what is.
Nice blog.

Mike, Mike, Mike … you left out the only one that really matters: Mickey Rourke as Charles Bukowski in the movie, Barfly.

Ah, you didn’t click through to the top 10.
#10 on the Maxim list is Mickey Rourke in Barfly. I hate being pedantic, but he actually played Henry Chinaski who’s likely based off of Bukowski. (I have to admit I still haven’t seen this movie, but it’s going in my Netflix queue!)
Speaking of Bukowski, if you’re ever in Boston, be sure to stop by Bukowski’s Tavern. They have one of the best selections of beer in Boston, including a huge number of hard-to-find imports replete with the correct glasses.
