And the Award Goes To New Belgium
The April 2006 issue of Men’s Health magazine has half a page devoted to the best beers under 140 calories per bottle. The winner is New Belgium’s Skinny Dip, which weighs in at 110 calories and 7 g of carbs.
They didn’t really rank the other beers but did give out stars for calories, carbs, and taste. Guinness Draught (125 cal. 9.9 g) received 3 stars for taste. Yuengling Premium (135 cal. 12 g) received 2 stars for taste. Sol Cerveza Especial (127 cal. 10 g) received only 1 star for taste, and Victory Lager (138 cal. 11 g) received three stars for taste.
However, the moral of the story isn’t necessarily that you should drink New Belgium. Instead, it’s that you should look past the “Light” label and look at the real nutritional facts and weigh them against the taste, especially since most light beers have a comparable number of calories and are unlikely to win any taste tests against regular brews.
