Beer Better Than Soda…for Kids?!

The Belgian organization Louvian Beer Therapists is encouraging schoolchildren to drink light ale instead of soft drinks. “A light alcoholic beer is far healthier than soft drinks which are often too sweet,” says spokesperson An Frankie, “Why don’t schools put a bottle of light beer on the table anymore like the used to.”

Um, maybe because it’s bad for kids to drink beer? I can almost see what she’s saying, since soft drinks are commonly blamed for obesity and health problems. However, giving kids a little beer doesn’t seem to be the best option. I can only imagine how much more trouble I would’ve gotten into as a drunk gradeschooler.

In case you’re wondering, the legal drinking age is 16 in Belgium.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed - Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.
