Local Legends
Pick up a copy of FHM May 2006, flip past the scantily clad women, and go straight to page 44. It features nine different local brews from around the US, which are likely impossible to get elsewhere:
- Genesee Cream Ale; Rochester, NY
- Point Special; Stevens Point, WI
- Narragansett; Providence, RI
- Huber Premium; Monroe, WI
- Iron City; Pittsburgh, PA
- Utica Club; Utica, NY
- Rhinelander; Monroe, WI
- La Crosse Lager; La Crosse, WI
- Shiner Blonde; Shiner, TX
For readers in those locales, I’m more than happy to accept gift samples from you.

I’ve had Genny Cream Ale, it’s definitely a college drink. Which fits FHM’s demo.

I think I’ve had all four of the beers from Wisconsin, or at least beers from those breweries. None of them are highly regarded by any means. Point Special is what they buy by the case for most parties at my college. Maybe it’s a good thing that those beers stay local beers.

The first beer I ever had was Gennessee Cream Ale. It was my father’s favorite “everyday” beer when I was growing up. I still think it’s a perfectly good macrobrewed beer. I have fond memories of that ugly green can.
I’m also an Iron City enthusiast. I’ll admit to a hometown bias (being a Pittsburgh native), but Iron City is a decent beer with a distinctive flavor and depth that unfortunately gets a bad rap. Even noted beer guru Michael Jackson likes it, and claims it’s bad reputation is unjustified.
Regrettably, Pittsburgh Brewing has been in dire financial straits for a while now, so Iron City may not be around for much longer. I dearly hope that they turn things around. They’re a historic brewery and one of the last independents. Too bad their product isn’t available outside of southwest PA.
