Off to Bartending School
Well, with my self-induced pending job loss (last day is tomorrow), I have plenty more time for other things, and one of the things I’d like to do is learn more about bartending. As an amateur bartender with a stack of books, I know a little but am certainly not confident enough to go out and find a bartending job. Furthermore, I would prefer being licensed. I realize that some people are able to go out and just do it, but I’ve always been of the opinion that a formal education can only be helpful. I just need that sort of reassurance.
After a little research, I found that there seem to be three major bartending schools in Boston. Close your eyes as the sites load. They’re pretty ugly, especially if you’re not using Internet Explorer:
They seem to all provide pretty much the same thing: a week of classes that include training and certification for $495. They offer lifetime job placement, experienced instructors, blah blah blah. It’s actually rather difficult to choose just by looking over there sites, so I ended up picking the first for three reasons:
- It’s the closest school to me. In fact, it’s right across the street from where I currently work.
- A friend of mine took a course there and had a satisfactory (though not great) experience.
- They offer CPR training as well, which doesn’t seem to be the norm.
The other schools offer discounts for pre-registration, and if I lived outside of Boston, I could take classes for much less at other locations. However, this seems to fit the best for me. In the end, $495 really isn’t much, considering that should be made up for within a few days of work.
I signed up online, and my first class should be this coming Monday. I’ll post about my experience as it happens.

Bartending school will be an interesting experience for you. I took a couple of courses, a few years ago, to check them out and they taught me some things. But welcome to the world of bartending!
