Barbarian Wine

The stereotype of wine drinkers today is those of the upper crust carefully sniffing and swirling their wines in fine crystal glasses. However, the history of wine is filled with many who lacked such “sophistication”.

In this case, it’s Celtic tribes who left behind a legacy of winemaking in northern Italy. Known to Romans as “Barbari”, they conquered and settled parts of northern Italy about 2500 years ago and, of course, began growing vines. Now, a couple Italians have recreated a winery in the Celtic tradition with a replica of a Celtic farm and recipes based on Celtic methods, and their wine is receiving rave reviews.
