Ancient Oenophiles

People who love wine and know everything about it have existed for centuries, and this article details wine geeks from ancient times.

It all began with the ancient Greeks who drank wine rather than beer like the Egyptians and Babylonians. They mixed their wine with water, so they looked for wines that had a flavor that would sruvive dilution. They also didn’t drink wine with meals. Instead, they drank it afterwards with snacks like fruits, nuts, and cake.

Then came the Romans who adopted the Greeks’ approach to wine, and last came the medieval Arabs who paid attention to the color of wine. They drank from glass unlike the Romans and Greeks who drank from pottery. Of course, the Koran disapproves of wine. However, that didn’t prevent them from drinking wine made by Christian monks.
