Buying Wine Futures

The Journal Gazette from Fort Wayne, IN has a good article about two reporters’ experiences in buying wine futures. Even for someone like me who can’t even begin to imagine doing this (no cellar, move a lot, likes wine but not that much), it’s a good read.

They talk about trying to buy wine for their newly born daughter two years ago with a vintage the same as her birthyear that would be drinkable in about 21 years. Citing the ubiquitous and ever powerful Robert Parker, they even demonstrate that the futures they bought are now worth almost twice as much as what they paid for them. Of course, at $43 a bottle, they weren’t cheap, but try imagining what this wine might be worth in 20 years. Then again, could you really stomach drinking a wine worth hundreds of dollars? I know I’d certainly find it difficult.
