Carnival of Drinking #1

Welcome to the first edition of the Carnival of Drinking!

It was fun to read all of the submitted articles, and I hope you all enjoy
them, too. Since there was no set theme, this first edition covers the whole
spectrum from making a cocktail and enjoying a specific sparkling wine vintage
to preventing drunk driving. Enjoy!

Darcy at The Art of Drink writes
in about the Burnt
Island Cocktail
, “A whisky cocktail that was created a while ago, but has
just recently started to gain some attention.” Now, I just need to go find half
the ingredients for what sounds like a heck of a cocktail!

Chris at Boston Cocktails blogged
about Acquired
Tastes
. He recently read
the book “Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails” by Ted Haigh in which
the author wrote about the modern drinkers’ disdain of the taste of alcohol.
Today’s trend is towards sweet vodka cocktails, and the appreciation of other
flavors and qualities of spirits have become lost.

Wine Amateur shares
with us a recent
tasty meal
of eye fillet wrapped
in pancetta on a parmesan potato cake base with enoki and shitaki mushrooms,
a veal jus and a spinach puree. He paired it with four different wines and
writes in with the tasting notes, and despite having just eaten lunch, I’m
now hungry.

Professor Bainbridge
on Wine
writes in about the Schramsberg
Brut Rose (California) 2003
. His tasting notes indicate that it goes well
with Cal-Asian cuisine and his favorite Californian sparkling wine!

Jeff at The Bottom Shelf presents a review of Barton
Guestier Chardonnay 2004
.
For two bottles, he paid only $10.05 (first bottle at full price; second
at a nickel)! Head on over to learn about it.

Doug at Below the Beltway presents A
Saturday Virginia Wine Tour
. He went
to four different wineries on a chartered tour and sampled 40 Virginian wines!
I’m jealous. Even better, the proceeds went to the American Cancer Society,
so he had both a heck of a time and felt good about it.

Jon Swift writes in about Waging
Preemptive War Against Drunk Drivers
. The Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission’s
new solution to drunk driving: arresting people in bars for being drunk
before they even step out of the bar. It sounds like “Minority
Report” for drinking. Note to self: stop at two in Texas.

Well, that’s it for this week. Keep the submissions coming!
Next week’s edition will be hosted by Jeff at The
Bottom Shelf
. The theme for next week is “something local”, a drink that
in some way can be traced as near to the submitter’s geographic location
as possible.
