Alcoholic Tidbits

Here’s an article detailing a number of random etymologies of alcoholic words. Just a few to keep you entertained until the article loads:

  • The word “intoxicate” comes from the Latin word for “to poison”.
  • “Gin” is the shorteneed form of “geneva” according to Merriam-Webster. However, Oxford says that it’s the Dutch “genever” which in term comes from the Latin “juniperus”.
  • The Benjamin Franklin once listed 229 words for drunkenness, e.g. “His head is full of bees,” and “He’s a cherry merry.”
