Buckeye Wine

I don’t really think of the Midwest as a center for wine culture, but there are wineries in all fifty states. One of those Midwestern states worth looking into is Ohio where the wine industry is apparently thriving. The linked article goes through a brief history and covers wineries in different regions in Ohio. The next time I head back to my home state of Indiana, I may have to drive through some Ohio wine country.

Interestingly, Ohio winemaking dates back to the early 1800s. By 1860, Ohio was the country’s leading wine producer! However, the industry declined soon therafter and didn’t return until the early 1960s. Now, winemaking is growing and improving in the state. Of course, it’s unlikely that you’ll find any Buckeye State wines next to the large Californian selections in your local wine store any time soon.
