Harpoon’s Saison in a Growler
Yesterday, I stopped by the Harpoon Brewery to pick up American Beer Fest tickets. At $15 each, they’re a steal, especially since Beer Advocate has raised ticket prices. Unfortunately, they only have 50 tickets available per session, and you can only buy 2 max per person. Plus, you must use cash. Just go and flash your Friend of Harpoon card.
While I was there, I figured, “Oh, I might as well get a growler,” so for $10.49, I picked up a 64 oz. jug of Saison beer. Again, this is another steal. Not accounting for the $2.50 bottle deposit, this comes out to $2/pint. Try finding that kind of price in a bar! Their regular beers (Saison’s a 100-barrel series) are a tad cheaper.
The cap (shown below) is clearly marked with the style of beer and date on which it was bottled. The beer is as fresh as it gets. The only downside (benefit?) is that once you open that growler and start drinking, you have to drink all of it. As a result, I ended up watching a couple movies while enjoying a whole growler of Saison. Everyone else seems to be busy with work or school.
I suppose another downside is the brewery is a bit out of the way. However, the silver line stops right in front of the brewery, so it’s very T-accessible. It’s just annoying to have to take two trains and a bus to get there.

Harpoon’s Saison, if you can get it, is a tasty Belgian-style ale that has a bit of spiciness, but not hot spiciness. Instead, it’s flavored with white pepper and cardamom. It has a golden yellow color and looks like a hefeweizen. I highly recommend it.
