E&Y European Beer Study

Brewers of Europe commissioned a study by Ernst & Young to analyze the beer industry in Europe. Some of their findings:

  • Europe is the most important beer producer in the world.
  • European breweries directly provide 164,000 jobs with 2.6 million jobs attributed to the beer industry.
  • There are about 3000 small and medium-sized businesses in European brewing.
  • Concentrations of direct employment are in Germany and the UK followed by some Central and Eastern European countries.
  • 4 of the 7 largest brewers are European.
  • European governments receive €39 billion ($50.2 billion) in taxes from beer.
  • Brewing contributes €57.5 billion ($74 billion) to the economy.
  • Consumers spend €125 billion ($160.8 billion) on beer annually.
  • European breweries produce 416 million hectolitres (11 billion gallons) of beer.

Clearly, beer is big business there and integral to their economy.
