Zin’s Only Historical, Not Official
Yesterday, California’s Senate approved a bill declaring Zinfandel to be a historic California wine. Notice I didn’t write the but a historic wine. How incredibly unexciting!
This grew from the original version of the bill that would have declared Zinfandel to be California’s official wine. However, under pressure from, well, everyone but zin growers, politicians slowly whittled away at the bill until it became exceedingly lame. However, it did include other exciting things such as the official state bird (California quail), insect (California dog-face butterfly), dance (West Coast swing), and grass (purple needlegrass). I wonder if there was as much of an outcry from ornithologists, entomologists, dancers, and uh, grassologists.
