The Beginning of the End for Beer Ads?
In nearby Lowell, there’s a Corona billboard just off the outbound Lowell Connector near Gorham Street, but it may not be there much longer. A column in The Sun fueled public outrage, and the city made a call to have the billboard removed. The Connector is apparently a dangerous strip of road that has had a number of crashes and fatalities caused by drunk driving.
OK, I can understand why they would feel that the billboard’s in bad taste and would want it removed, though I’m still unclear how a billboard for Corona translates into a message encouraging drunk driving. However, they’re then taking it a step further that doesn’t make any sense to me. The Massachusetts Legislature is now considering a bill that would restrict the MBTA from putting beer ads anywhere. That means no beer ads on the T, on buses, or any MBTA property. Wow. The linked article implies that it’s only beer ads, though I wonder if the legislation applies to wine and liquor as well.
