Clamping Down on Wine Names
I was under the impression that port had to come from Portugal and that sherry had to come from Spain. Apparently, that’s not currently the case, but it may soon be. Focused on Australia’s burgeoning wine industry, an agreement with the European Union may further restrict their use of traditional European wine names. After a decade of negotiation, it looks like this will finally happen.
Along with port and sherry, white burgundy will be restricted to Burgundy, France, and Tokay will be restricted to Hungary. Possible replacement names: port → Australian fortified red wine, sherry → Australian fortified white wine, white burgundy → dry white wine, tokay → Australian fortified wine. Is it just me or do these new names really suck? They desperately need a marketing expert to come in and give them some better names.
