Synthehol Pills To Come?

A number of scientists are now testing drugs that deliver the good benefits of alcohol without the bad. The good benefits here would include relaxation and sociability without the obvious bad effects such as puking all over yourself. (My roommate did that once in college. Good thing he was wearing his boyfriend’s suit instead of his own.) These drugs don’t appear to be geared towards other benefits like the nutrients and antioxidants that wine and beer can provide.

A neuropsychopharmacologist at University of Maryland has tested a drug that prevents alcohol from making rats clumsy and drowsy. Plus, he’s patented a couple of drugs that mimic some of the good effects of booze in rats and baboons. Another scientist at Bristol has a drug that prevents memory loss due to drinking. And yet another doctor at California University has made a sobering-up pill.

With all these wonderful drugs around the corner, can anyone say “soma”?
