Animal Cruelty or Just Happy Pigs?

Priscilla the Beer-Drinking PigIt looks like no bit of celebrity comes without its downside. The Pub in the Paddock has been embroiled in an animal cruelty debate for its beer-drinking pigs Priscilla and Priscilla Babe, which I blogged about in April. The animal welfare group Choose Cruelty Free attacked the Tasmanian bar in its latest magazine edition. The organization’s office manager stated, “It’s not natural to give a pig beer,” yet the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals already ruled that it’s not animal cruelty. The owner of the pub, Anne Free states that the pigs enjoy the beer and that they are never inebriated, due to watering down the drinks.

Is it animal cruelty or hog heaven? You decide.

Considering that cows will eat fermented dropped apples of their own volition, I see nothing wrong with tossing Porky the occasional brew. It’s just a glass of bread with a splash of alcohol, after all.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.
