Liquor Consolidation
No, I’m not referring to pouring small bottles of liquor into bigger bottles to save space, though I admit that that’s kind of fun. Instead, I’m referring to two recent announcements in the liquor industry:
- Here in Massachusetts, nearly all the booze will now come from two major distributors due to Martignetti’s buying United Liquors. This leaves only Horizon Beverage Co. to compete. Honestly, I don’t know enough about the economics of liquor distribution to say whether this is beneficial or not, though I inherently want to lean towards the later.
- Elsewhere in the world, Bacardi is rumored to be considering an IPO. The already gigantic company needs more cash to compete against even more gargantuan companies like Diageo. Bacardi has thus far been family-owned, though when you’re dealing with 600 other family members, things are bound to get ugly.
