Beer Foam
For all you foam-haters out there, remember that foam can make beer taste better. Jim Koch of Sam Adams fame and Grady Hull of New Belgium agree that the foam helps release hop aroma and helps hold onto others to make the beer taste better. Of course, some beers are traditionally served with a nice rich head regardless, but this can likely help even with beers like American lagers, which are usually served with as little head as possible. To enhance the experience, don’t drink out of a bottle or can but a glass instead. Of course, this probably doesn’t apply to Guiness bottles with rocket widget.
The article also suggests a couple interesting theories behind usage of lemons and limes. It’s obviously traditional to have lemon with hefeweizen, but why are limes and lemons served with Mexican pilsners? One theory is that it helps mask the metallic taste of the can. Another more cynical suggestion is that it helps mask the taste of the beer.
For those who are braver, try drinking the remnants of salsa with beer instead, a Mexican tradition. Well, at least for my college roommate’s family.
