Falling off the Wagon

Surely, you’ve heard of the phrase “fall off the wagon” to refer to failing to give up drinking. Personally, I fall off the wagon daily. However, you may not know the phrase’s origins. Ask Yahoo! clues us in. The “wagon” refers to a water cart used to hose down dusty roads on hot days. Thus, if someone was “on the wagon”, then “‘they would sooner climb aboard a water cart to quench their thirst’ than have a drop of liquor”. Thus, falling off the wagon would be just the opposite.

I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.
