Taxation of Booze
Rick Lyke at Lyke 2 Drink put together a great blog post about drinking and taxes. My eyes immediately zoomed in on the two charts linked at the bottom that break down taxes by state. I had actually not known how much money went to the government each time I had a drink, and frankly, I’m horrified by some of the extremely high tax rates. Surprisingly, Taxachusetts isn’t really all that high compared to many other states.
According to the first linked chart, MA charges $4.05 per gallon of liquor, $0.55 per gallon of wine, and $0.11 per gallon of beer. The second one breaks it down a bit more: $3.30 per barrel of beer, $0.55 per gallon of wine, $0.70 per gallon of sparkling wine, $1.10 per gallon of 30 proof or lower liquor, and $4.05 per gallon of higher than 30 proof liquor.
If you’re looking to get drunk as cheaply as possible, all the numbers except for prices are right here for you.
