Bubonic Plague Was Behind Beer Steins
Here’s a neat bit of trivia: the beer stein was invented due to the Bubonic plague. By the 1500s, the Germans had figured out that sanitation and good hygiene was key to staying healthy. As a result, they instituted laws that required covers on all food and beverage containers, hence the invention of the beer stein.
Now that we know more about good hygiene, the covers aren’t quite necessary. Instead, they’re just cool.
