How To Taste Single Malt Scotch
WikiHow has a fun (yet serious) little article about tasting single malt Scotch. I’ve reproduced a summary of the steps below:
- Buy a bottle of single malt whisky. (Duh.)
- Buy a good glass, preferably a snifter. This isn’t in the wiki, but some people actually prefer narrower glasses to help concentrate the smell.
- Swirl the whisky around and smell.
- Add water—but not too much.
- Swirl again and smell.
- Take a sip and swish it around your mouth.
- Taste the whisky.
- Swallow but do not open your mouth or completely close your throat.
- Repeat 5-8 until you run out of Scotch.
From what I’ve seen so far, the other 166 current articles in the drinks category should be good resources as well.
