W Is for Wine

Due to recent events such as the BA beer fest (which was awesome), the articles have started piling up, and one of the most frequent topics is wine. Rather than hit you over the head with a dozen wine-related posts, I’ve tried to weed out the crappy ones and to consolidate the rest:

  • Wine Tasting Kits: If you don’t know about wine and want to learn more, then there are plenty of businesses out there happy to teach you via the wine tasting kit. There are no specific recommendations. Instead, it’s a general guide to what you can expect.
  • EU Sells 100,000 Hectoliters of Wine: Unfortunately, it’s not to be consumed. Instead, it’s to be turned into things like fuel to keep wine prices artificially high. In case you’re wondering, that’s over 2.6 million gallons of good wine gone to waste. Yeah, they did something similar last year, too.
  • EU Farm Commissioner Says Simplify Wine Labels: By the very fact that wine tasting kits exist and the crazy wine glut, wineries (particularly European wineries) should realize that wine labels should be simplified. They’re oftentimes mysterious and incomprehensible, and now, an EU official agrees. Perhaps we’ll see more back labels soon that clue us into what exactly is in the bottle.
  • Wineries from the Sky: Appellation America has some 3400 wineries listed and are adding lots of pictures. The site’s a bit hard to navigate, but once you find what you’re looking for, you’ll be happy.
  • Truly Weird Wines: When someone says “wine”, most people automatically think “grapes”. However, that’s not always true. Wine can technically be made from any fruit and some wineries even try non-fruits. Learn a bit about rhubarb, dandelion, fish, garlic, onion, and other weird wines.
