What Wine Should I Serve with My Thanksgiving Turkey?

The answer: none. Choose beer instead.

I’ve seen a large number of articles in past years about which wine to serve with a turkey, and they always hem and haw about how the bird doesn’t really match well with a specific wine blah blah blah. And quite frankly, I agree with Lisa Morrison’s assessment, “[Buck] the trend and [go] traditional this year.” Besides, if you really want to go full Pilgrim, you should choose beer. The whole reason they ended up here was that they ran out of beer on the Mayflower. (Seriously.) Of course, I might not necessarily have the choice of beer, as my girlfriend’s parents are steadfast wine lovers, but this whole entry is good for future reference.

Here are some of the article’s ideas:

  • Salads/appetizers: Try matching with wheat beer (e.g., hefeweizen, weissbier, witbier, etc.), Kolsch, or pilsner. If you have blue cheese or nuts, try a doppelbock. Otherwise, you can also try a pale or amber ale.
  • Turkey: Try amber ale, dubbel or tripel, or Oktoberfest.
  • Dessert: Spiced ale (to match pumpkin pie), stout, or porter are good choices. If you have cheesecake, try a lambic.
