Happy Repeal Day!
Today in 1933, teetotalling Utah became the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment. This abolished the 18th Amendment and ended the failed national experiment of Prohibition. For the math, history, and Constitution-challenged, 75% of states must ratify Constitutional Amendments for them to path. In 1933, there were only 48 states, hence the need for 36 states to ratify the Amendment.
Amendment XVIII
Section. 1. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.
Sec. 2. The Congress and the several States shall have concurrent power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
Sec. 3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.
Amendment XXI
Section 1. The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.
Sec. 2. The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use there in of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited.
Sec. 3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by conventions in the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.
In celebration of the 73rd anniversary of this very important historic day, which makes this blog possible, I’m going to attempt to barf out 73 ways to celebrate Repeal Day. This is stream-of-consciousness (like pretty much all this horrid blog writing), so excuse the goofiness of the suggestions. I started typing this at 2:00 AM. Will I get out all 73 before I collapse in a state of drunken tiredness?
- Most importantly, enjoy an alcoholic drink, because you have a Constitutionally guaranteed right to it!
- Visit a package store.
- Visit a brewery.
- Visit a brewpub.
- Stop by your favorite watering hole.
- Stop by a new bar to which you’ve never been.
- Tell someone else that it’s Repeal Day.
- Throw a party with lots of booze.
- Buy your best buddy a beer.
- Read through the Days That End in Y archives.
- Visit one of the many flourishing drink blogs. (Check out the blogroll.)
- Try homebrewing your own beer.
- Try your hand at creating your own wine.
- Order wine via the Internet.
- Fight for your right to enjoy other things in life by writing a letter to your Representative or Senator.
- Dress as your favorite booze-related character, e.g., Samuel Adams.
- Write a letter to your local newspaper and ask them why they don’t have an article about Repeal Day. Then, point out how great blogs like this one are celebrating the day!
- Write your Congressman or Senator and demand that Repeal Day be named an official holiday.
- Mix yourself a cocktail you’ve never tried before.
- Buy a cocktail recipe book.
- Buy a ticket for the next beer fest in your area. Bostonians should check out Beer Advocate and Beer Summit.
- Submit an article to Days That End in Y.
- Start your own drinking blog. Don’t forget to tell me about it, so I can add you to the blogroll!
- Drive through your state’s local wine country. All 50 states have wineries!
- Try a new liquor outside of the usual vodka, gin, rum, whisky, etc. Some readily available ideas are cacha

That’s an interesting dilemma. All I can say is do whatever you think is best and right, and that I’m a horrible source for religious advice!
There’s no chance of you’re doing this in a shed out back or something? For your wife, out of sight, out of mind.
Also, do you have a source for the tidbit about Brigham Young? I’d never heard that before.

It is pretty well-known around Salt Lake that Brother Brigham operated the first brew pub in Salt Lake and distilled spirits in his home for what he called “rational purposes”
