Wine Does California Good

Here are some interesting 2005 statistics from an article about the wine industry’s affect on the California economy. California:

  • Had 2,275 bonded wineries, up 34 percent from the 1,704 in 2002.
  • Had 4,600 grape growers, down 4 percent from 2002.
  • Employed 309,000 people, up 49 percent from the 207,550 reported in 2002.
  • Paid its employees total wages of $9 billion, up 18 percent from 2002.
  • Produced 2.7 billion bottles of wine, down 14 percent from the 3.12 billion bottles produced in 2002.
  • Created wines with a total retail value of $16.5 billion, up 9 percent from $15.2 billion in 2002.
  • Attracted $2 billion in spending by visitors in 2005, a 54 percent increase from 2002.
  • Made charitable contributions of $115 million, up 58 percent from 2002.
