I was just plain confused when I read this article entitled “Poms Whinge So Hard That Beer Ad Is Pulled“. OK, I know what a beer is, but what’s a “pom”? In fact, I’m not sure what “whinge” means either. Here’s a brief guide to understanding what the hell they mean in this article:
- Pom: an Englishman (derogatory?)
- whinge: whine, moan, slag, complain
- slag: whinge, whine, moan, complain
- Tooheys: an Australian beer company known for some awesome ads
- cricket: boring game that’s not quite baseball
- sha****s: um, shaggers? (I didn’t realize that it was such a bad term that it’d have to be censored.)
Anyway, if you ever find yourself down under, you might need a slang guide. Pay special attention to the words for beer: amber fluid, butcher, coldie, grog, piss, etc.
