French Wine Labels To Become Comprehensible

A new “Vignobles de France” label will allow French wineries to blend and sell wine under a standard national French label. The hope is that consumers will be able to better understand wine labels and will thus buy more French wine. Traditionalists of course rue the loss of precious French tradition of attaching wine to different regions.

However, considering the US drank a record 300 million cases of wine last year (much of it New World wine), that seems like a smart move on their part.

Will it enable France to stay on top, though? A British survey shows that they’ll lose #1 to the US by 2010.
