Weekend Round-Up

Well, as seems to be the theme this second year of blogging, I’m constantly falling behind. Anyway, I’ll be gone all weekend without (gasp) access to a computer. Hopefully, I’ll be able to post again on Monday before I disappear for another week, though I’ll be sure to have my laptop with me then.

Anyway, here it goes:

  • Russians congregate over internet, drink via USB shot glasses: Sergey Mikheev has devised an USB shot glass. Drinkers come together in an online lounge and ward off the evils of solo drinking.
  • Expert Village is putting 75,000 bartending videos online over the next 12-18 months. Good God. You’ll be able to learn how to make nearly anything. About.com is also doing the same thing, but I don’t think they’re planning on 75,000 videos! Via The Martini Lounge
  • The cost of beer drinking could rise due to demand for biofuel. Strong demand for corn, soybeans, and rapeseed is causing famers to plant less barley. Less barley supply means higher prices ceteris paribus, i.e., beer drinkers get the shaft due to the world’s fuel-consuming ways. Oh, well. At least, it’s good for the environment.
  • This year’s Bombay Sapphire designer class competition has an American winner: Michael Krizner from Georgia with his “palletini”. The palletini is reminiscent of a painter’s palette and is totally kooky. Krizner’s now off to Milan for the international competition to claim America’s rightful throne in the designer glass world!
  • Thinking about doing this year’s taxes makes me want to have a drink. Good thing there’s Carmine Sodora’s Tavern Tax Service in New Jersey that serves drinks while he does your taxes. Peanuts are included.
  • Yup, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino is a total bore in comparison to way cool Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman. Why? Goodman is teaching a college class in martini mixology. Last year, he stated that drinking was one of his hobbies and told a fourth-grade class that the one thing he’d take with him to a deserted island was a bottle of gin. Dayum!
  • Lastly, more research confirms that alcohol is good for men. Light daily intake (a bit less than one glass per day) is associated with a lower rate of cardiovascular death and death from all causes. This appears to be true for all booze, but wine provides the most benefits.

Anyway, have a good weekend! I’m now off to Sugarloaf for the next two days.

I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.
