Drinking in Paris
Here are some random tips and tidbits about drinking in Paris, which I’ve noticed in my short time here.
- Wine is extremely inexpensive. You can easily pick up bottles of wine for only a few euro. It’s practically not worth it to drink anything else.
- Beer is practically nonexistent at most restaurants, and when it’s available, there are maybe one or two boring choices at best. Plus, it costs more than wine.
- Restaurants tend to have very short wine menus. I have yet to see a giant tome of wines as is common in the USA, though I’ve been dining at some fairly nice places. Usually, they just have a short list of reds, whites, and ros

Bonjour, Mike! Don’t know if it’s too late, but if you’re still in Paris, try getting your hands on some absinthe. I hear the French stuff is pretty good. If you do get a chance to try some, I’d love a full report, since it’s banned here in les Etats-Unis!

I actually just bought a bottle of absinthe today. Somewhat embarassingly, the primary reason I bought it was the bottle was in the shape of the Eiffel Tower. However, it looks promising, and it’s a product of France. Oddly enough, I hadn’t seen any until today and am a bit unclear on their laws, but this particular absinthe does contain wormwood. I’ll be sure to post about it later.

My friends just came back from Argentina with a couple handful of Havana Club (anejo blanco) bottles, and man are they good.

Thanks for the report. I’m happy to learn that the French don’t bother with wine glasses, as I do not either.
Get clarification on what counts as “table” or “region” wine.

Wow…I love your site. I stumbled upon it on accident and am completely thrilled with what I’ve laid eyes on. I have just started drinking wine and needed to find some good informative materials in which to dive. Keep up the great work.
