Researchers have discovered that certain compounds, so-called “fructans”, may be useful for carrying drugs to the colon. The usual problem is that drugs are destroyed by stomach acid and never get to the intestine. Fructans, however, may be used to create microspheres to transport those drugs and to protect against said stomach acid.
In case you’re wondering how this is related to alcohol, recall that the blue agave is used to make tequila. It’s a good thing tequila came into existence. Otherwise, all these blue agave plants wouldn’t be around for such useful medical research.
