There's probably some tour deals that you can take out of Oakland that do the driving for you if you want to imbibe above the legal limit (who doesn't?). There also is a hostel in Marin County just south of Sonoma if you really want to do it cheap. It's suppose to be really pretty and I do recommend a visit to the area. You can drive there too as well.
