About Mike

Who are you?
Well, my name’s Mike. I’m 25 years old, and I live in Boston (specifically Allston). These days, I’m a self-employed freelance web developer. I originally grew up in the Midwest but decided to stay on the East Coast after graduating from college.
Wow, you’re so young! How do you know so much about alcohol?
People ask me this all the time, especially since I look like I could be in high school. (It’s the youthful Asian looks.) I’ll tell you the truth right now: I know very little. At least, I feel like I know very little. When I first started blogging, I’d only recently been introduced to the world of craft beer and had begun branching out from drinking Corona, cheap vodka, and the mysterious punch at parties. Through blogging, being curious, and drinking adventurously, I’ve widened my palate and appreciation for all sorts of booze. Here’s where I also thank the help of my lush friends and the Alström brothers for BeerAdvocate. When I think back, my appreciation of drinking really stems from attending their beer fests. That first Belgian Beer Fest in 2004 was what really opened my mind to the possibilities out there.
Do you get Asian flush?
No, I think I may be defective. I simply remain yellow.
Why did you decide to start Days That End in Y?
I was completely bored at work and was trying to think of a personal project that would keep me entertained, that would enhance my skillset, and that would increase my knowledge. I figured a site about drinking was just about right! Plus, I was trying to scheme a way of making some extra money.
So do you make gobs of money from this site?
I wish. Here’s a tip to all those who are just starting out blogging: do it for fun—not for money. If you do it for money, you will be very quickly disappointed.
How’d you come up with the name “Days That End in Y” anyway?
This is based on the joke, “I only drink on days that end in ‘y’”. Plus, more obvious domains like “alcoholblog.com” were already taken.
Don’t you ever worry about your liver?
Yes, though I try to drink in moderation. Besides, this is all about the appreciation of a good drink. If you’re completely wasted, you’re really not enjoying the drink itself.
What’s your favorite drink?
That’s a tough one. I’m a very eclectic drinker, but I generally reach for beer first. Among beers, my favorite styles tend to be hefeweizen and IPA. If I’m not drinking beer, then I’m probably drinking bourbon or gin. And if I’m not drinking beer, bourbon, or gin, then I’m probably drinking some sort of red wine.In reality, it mostly depends on my mood. I’m not all that picky. I can easily drink a pitcher of Bud Light with my less discerning friends without complaining (too much), but I very much appreciate a quality drink made with quality ingredients.
So what do you do when you’re not drinking?
Not drinking? What’s that? OK, for the record, that was a joke in case I ever need to be gainfully employed once again. The real answer is all sorts of things. These days, I’m concentrating primarily on web development, photography, and entrepreneurship. One of these days, I’ll figure out a kickass way to combine those three things into one.
I have a question you haven’t answered yet.
Ask me!

I drink to make other people interesting.
